If he's been paying his own rent in full for the past 52 weeks he'll be able to get full rent paid for 13 weeks. iirc. will double check later.

Real1314 is correct that if your friend could afford his rent when he moved in and he has not claimed Housing Benefit for the previous 52 weeks anywhere in the country then he will be entitled to 13 week protection which is full rent paid for 13 weeks.

Benefits should do this automatically but some don't.

After the protection is up he will get the single room rent as he is under 25, to find out how much he will get to your local council's website and search under benefits and local housing allowance and this will tell him the maximum for someone in his situation.

Unfortunately he only moved in at the end of february and was told 2 weeks later that he was under threat of redundancy - the threat which turned into a reality, thanks for the info though x

just checked it, looks like he should be ok for 13 weeks, the rule (as i read it) is that he must have been able to afford it when he took up the tenancy (i.e when he moved in and could pay from his wages) and that he has not claimed HB in the past 52 weeks (I assume he hasn't).

should give him 13 weeks to sort things out.

It's mpt always spotted by HB staff though - my old copy of Zebedee Ward and Lister's guide to HB and CTB has it at para 10.38 (2003-04 edition) - things *might* have changed slightly as the new LHA scheme will apply, but I'd expect there to be a similar protection.
