Do bannks charge for cancelling a cheque?

It's the first i've heard of a bank charging £7 to stop a cheque as my bank didn't (Abbey), yet my partners bank has (Halifax) - i wouldn't mind but the cheque hasn't even been put into the receipients account yet. Bit cheeky isn't it - £7?

Alliance & Leicester charge £12 the last time I asked them about it.
  • Most banks levy a charge to stop a cheque if the reason for stopping is that you don't want the person who has the cheque to have the money. The only time a cheque is cancelled for free is if it is lost or stolen.

As far as I know, the only time banks do not charge is if the cheque is lost or stolen, and a duplicate is issued.

It is very common for banks to charge a fee for this service (although Abbey's current account doesn't). Your partner may get away with it if he can plead a case (such as it was lost in the post). Incidentally, if it had gone through the beneficiary's account it couldn't be stopped.
