Tesco Direct.... email yesterday shows offer on their speed camera update , at half rrp = £9.99
I had an email from tomtom just 3 weeks ago announcing this latest update .. and bought it at their special price of £16.60
Feeling somewhat miffed about this !!.. i emailed tomtom yesterday and politely made the point that i was unhappy that a supermarket could offer me a far better price ...than the manufacturer offerred directly.
Within an hour i got a reply ... simply stating the old " nothing to do with us what retailers do etc" ..excuse
I replied that i was very sure that a tomtom executive would have specifically arranged the promotion with Tesco .. and fund the reduction !! and therefore tomtom were fully responsible.
I suggested that if they were unable for me to buy from them with confidence .. they should stop sending me communications and offers .
They promptly replied " we have taken you off our mailing list !!"
Have to say i am extremely disappointed in Tomtoms' attitude.

Why? You obviously thought it was worth £16.60 and now you don't?
If you got a wage rise would you also demand it paid for the years previous?0 -
ppp don't see the relevance of your comments at all.?
I am commenting on a straightforward situation where a manufacturer emails their customers with a new product and recommends people to buy it.
To then have it selling in a supermarket only 3 weeks later at a substantially cheaper price is not... in my view .. ethical.0 -

Hardly ethical buying from Tesco!
:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Not sure exactly what you bought, but speed camera database update is available from pocketgpsworld for £2
Not sure where ethics come in to ur situation. Tescos screw all their suppliers for the cheapest possible price THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY EThICS0 -
The prices of things drop.
Things are almost always more expensive direct from the manufacturer.
I don't see anything unethical about Tesco having used its buying power to provide something cheaper as a middle man that a customer can get directly from a supplier as a one-off sale.
Overheads for TomTom are way lower when sending 50,000 copies of the update to a tesco warehouse than when sending one copy to you.
Most manufacturers don't sell directly to customers for that reason. Couple in the costs of you theoretically returning it to them, and their processing the return, and it really doesn't make business sense for them to sell direct to end-users.They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
You win some and you lose some .... I'm sure if the price had gone up, you wouldnt have said a word!!! In fact, you would have been happy in getting a bargain.
By the way, is the Tesco one the same database as the Tomtom one anyway? The tesco one might be a different database that works on the Tomtom (just like the £2 pocketgpsworld one).If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0 -

What price Tesco choose to sell things at is their business. Maybe Tesco are selling it as a loss leader.
I really don't understand why you're complaining. Was the update not worth £16 then?0 -

exactly maybe this is the price tesco have bought them for and are selling them on at no profit,or are maybe even loosing money on them.
it was only £6 of a difference, hardly megabucks.and you have had it for 3 weeks, maybe its cheap because its out of date or will be soon who knows?...work permit granted!0
