Safest method of buying online?

Hi all,
I have been purchasing goods online using my debit card which I have slight concerns regarding my protection. I also have paypal but that does not cover many aspects of purchasing goods as I would like. I have thought of getting a credit card for the first time with my current bank but was interested to see if there was any other options available to me. So basically I want something purely for internet protection as my peers at work are suggesting that a debit card is not the best option for internet shopping.
Thanks.
With a little bit of luck we can make it through the night!

If your debit card is Visa or Maestro, you can register for Verified by Visa or MasterCard Secure Code service. These services provide additional layer of security (asking for password) when you make a purchase from participating online merchant.

You can also use the service of PayPal or other similar provider. Visit https://www.paypal.com for more info.
However, credit cards offer the most comprehensive consumer protection. I would recommend you get one (with your bank) and pay off the bill in full every month to avoid interest.
