Any help appreciated-boiler gas valve

Hi all

Had a gas engineer come round to fix an unrelated problem and he says the boiler valve is faulty and leaking gas into the system even when the boiler is not firing ie there is a gas build up and when it fires, it is an explosion risk...he recommends replacement of the valve, no exact price yet but says its around £200.
He has switched off the boiler so no hot water tonight

Is the valve likely to be the problem?
Is the quote reasonable?
Anything else I should consider?

    Hi
not sure if this helps but here up north the £200 quote sounded about right - The fuelsaver gas valves depending on model retail around the £120 + vat mark and allowing for fitting approx £50 + vat

Our labour charges up north are considerably lower than down south and maybe this is where the difference lies - time getting to the job etc -

heres a link with glow worm gas http://www.pricerightheating.com/Shop/ShopProducts.asp?fdShopProductShopProduct2Id=213Dazvalve costs

Hi my corgi hubby says it would be the valve and there could be a risk of an explosion. Maybe think about a new boiler!

Thanks to all the replies. Quote was 300 for part, 120 for labour. Spoken to a few people and they agree getting the boiler replaced will be cheaper in the long run than doing an expensive repair on an old boiler...plus I feel I might be getting ripped off by this company

    I've been Money Tipped!
Where did you get the Company from? Was it Yellow Pages or Thomson directory?
There are many Firms listed in these that are in fact the same people at the end of the line. These Firms use dubious self employed people and they are told to double whatever cost the part is and add upto £95 per half hour labour charge. OH is CORGI reg and he says look at new boiler as an option.
