Bankruptcy is an individual thing. You can and have to do it separately, although many couples who are jointly in financial trouble choose to go through the process at the same time.

If just one of you goes BR at first, then if there are any genuinely joint debts like joint loans or overdrafts on joint accounts then the non-bankrupt partner will remain liable for the full debt.

The only thing I can advise and it is only advice is to stop paying any cards/loans then try and save up. You will get hassled from creditors ,but bearing in mind phones can be unplugged and numbers changed and letters can be filed in a folder of doom.

MSE also has a guide on IVAs here: Guide to IVAs - Are they worth it?

    Really worth reading through.

thinking of you, i totally understand about the embarrassment, i just wanted the ground to swallow me up, however i will always remeber the guy at the court who told me to hold my head up high and walk out and start the rest of my life, he was the magistrate!! nobody goes bankrupt without it being the only option, in my experience anyway, good luck and walk tall!

    Hi Pabinlove,

I have just declared myself bankrupt and my partner will be doing that next month and the court are aware of that so you can do it one before the other if it's better for you :)
