USB Flash Drive

I have purchased a Buffalo USB (2.0) flash drive from Novatech.
I inserted into my PC (running XP about 5 years old) it wouldn't recognise the drive and wouldn't install the drivers. However when I inserted into my brothers PC (running XP about 1 year old) it was recognised and all drivers were installed.
Any ideas why this is? Could it be that on the older PC the USB ports are v1.0 and not the the newer v2.0 USB?

USB should be backwardly compatible - ie USB2 devices plugged into a USB 1 socket will work - only slower and you may get a message saying this.
Is your copy of XP legal and up to date with Service Package 2 and all the latest updates - if not then this may be the problem.0 -
You shouldn't need drivers either, not normally if you system is up to date (but it depends what tools are on the stick).
USB 2 as mattogier says is backwards compatible with USB 1. Have you tried different USB ports?
Are you plugging it into the machine, or to an un-powered USB hub?0 -
Do you have any mapped drives? I had a similar problem because I had an E: mapped drive, and my USB flash drive also wanted to call itself E: and therefore did not work. Once I had deleted/renamed my mapped drive the USB flash drive worked fine.0
