Reapir or replace?

It should be a no brainer or should it? My Panasonic VHS recorder has gone phut, the recorder heads needing replacing. Overall cost will be £78, which includes £20 already spent on diagnosis. According to shop other parts look OK. Now within that total of £78 I could get an LG or a Phillips VR550 or LG880, but they do not have some of the Panny's functions e.g. Video+. PDC. I am quite fond of the old machine, even though it is used for secondary analogue recording, when the DVDR is occupied with other recording from Freesat from Sky, and the missus has tapes we use to play to our infant grandchildren. Is there anything particular about the possible replacements to be warned about? Overall which way to go?

Sounds like a lot of money to spend on an outdated technology that will be almost completely obsolete in a couple of years when the analogue TV signal is turned off. Personally I'd buy something off Ebay, like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PHILIPS-NICAM-HI-FI-Video-Recorder-VR550-6-Heads_W0QQitemZ230244341147QQihZ013QQcategoryZ3318QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

... and hope that it lasts until I have no more use for it.

VCRs are a good item to buy from Ebay - there is very little demand these days so prices are low.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

If it was me I'd get a cheap second hand one- preferably from someone you know like neighbour/workmate.
Hard drive recorders are the current tech - also known as pvr.

Might be worth checking Cash Converters/Generators as they often have lesser known branded electricals they sell.
