Another DVLA question - you're help much appreciated!

Hi there,
Firstly, I have searched previous posts and havn't found anything directly relevant to me and was hoping you guys may be able to help.
So, thanks for reading this far:
basically, my situation is this:
I bought a car a year ago, had a technical problem in January and sold it to a scrap dealer man who came to my house. I had lost my original V5 but the DVLA said the name and address of the dealer would be sufficient. So I got him to sign a make-shift receipt and I did the same. I sent it off to the DVLA shortly after.
HOWEVER, the DVLA have never received this, so it may as well have not happened. So, the DVLA believe the car belongs to me. Which is worrying in itself, however I was taxed until the end of May. So now I am extremely worried and scared. I don't know what to do. I have now LOST the details of the guy I sold the car to, presumably he has destroyed it by now (the car enginge was LONG gone).
I don't know what to do, I can't prove I have sold it, I don't know how to get the guys name. I'm stupid for losing my second copy after sending it but I may be in the !!!! house. My 4 months of lost tax and the possible £40/£80 fine are the least of my worries. I don't know what to do. Last time I spoke to DVLA they said send them dealer details and date, but now I don't have this info.
Does anyone know ANYTHING that can help me before I phone their general number and just explain this to them. I hope so.
Thanks you very much for reading

Also I can't do an online SORN to buy time cause I don't have the vehicle log number thing for it! Only the registration! lol.
I could ask for another V5 for £25 from DVLA to get this, but it'd take longer than the 4 weeks I have to get that, THEN SORN it so I need to resolve it in next couple of days. Poop.0 -
Just write to the DVLA (preferably recorded) and tell them the full story, give them as much detail as possible including the fact the car was sold for scrap and the approximate date you notified them of the transfer. These things happen, I'm sure it won't be the first such problem the DVLA have had to sort out.====0

I'm puzzled that the scrap dealer purchased without a V5 -also did you remove road tax from car when sold?
If car is destroyed that is good - because no potential motoring fines can come to you0 -

Yea he didn't give two hoots about it to be honest just took it, I can't imagine the car being used cause the engine was in such a bad state of repair and the car was 12 years old it wouldn't be worth while. I'm just worried about what they will say tomorrow in case they say "sorry we can't change it out of your name" or something :-/0 -
Just write to DVLA to explain.
You need to quote your details, vehicle details (reg mark, make/model), when sold (give as near as possible to exact date) and state you sold it to an unknown scrap dealer.
Send to:
DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1AR
or Fax to 01792 783083
If posting, perhaps send by recorded delivery to ensure it is received.
As long as you state that you have disposed of it, your name will be taken off the vehicle record.
Hope that helps

Thank you guys for your response. Well, as I had an idea of what to say I finally phoned them again and they said just to fax them. The woman was trying to get rid of me from the start and told me less than flutterbyuk did (thank you very much especially :-) ).
I will fax them on the 3 different numbers i've found and hope they receive it and action it! I just hope they will do it even though I don't know the guys name and address.
Thank you for your help, I'll let you know if I get imprisoned or not :-P0 -
Forgot to mention you will get letter to confirm disposal within 4weeks

I recently scrapped my car and the trader insisted on V5 as any trader wishing to scrap needs to be registered and show proof of title which would be a slip on the V50 -
The price of scrap at the moment everyone is a scrap dealerMy opinions are purely my own act on them at your own risk :think:0
