SORN advice please
Options
Hi folks - friend of mine went away to HKong in 1980s and drove his personal car into a garage whilst he was away, expecting to sort it out on his return. At this time there was no thing as SORN so no probs. However, he is still abroad and is still leasing the garage (from Council) with the original car still inside!! He is still unaware of the SORN situation but wants to stop renting the garage so will need to sell or scrap vehicle. Does anyone know what paperwork he needs to do either of these - the car is over 29 yrs old anyway so will probably want to scrap it but doesnt he need a SORN , even for the years when he was abroad??
I cant help him with this - can anyone else ?
best wishes to all who reply

There is the correct thing which is contact DVLA and ask them.
Alternatively the sensible thing is say nothing and either scrap it or check to see if it has any value. There must be hundreds like this around the country and I very much doubt the DVLA will be that bothered unless it appears on the street again even then all you have to do is go back to my first suggestion.

Might be a classic....and could before worth a few quid if it's been garaged for 29 years:eek:0

what inside the garage? im intrigued.
it will be worth something to someone dont scrap it,find an owners club or forum for whatever car it is and offer it to them for a good price.
let us know what it is!...work permit granted!0 -
I agree, some really good cars turn up that have been hidden away in garages. Could well be worth serious bucks having been hidden away for 29 years. Would love to know what type of car it is and see loads of high res pics inside and out for sheer curiosity if nothing else. This is the sort of car that would possibly end up in a museum or be used by someone for car shows.
Should need little more than a new battery, tank draining (even better if it was dry stored), new oil and filter, LRP in the tank and hopefully it should fire up, and boy would I love to be the person doing thatI suspect some seals will need renewing somewhere though due to age. And I also suspect parts of the engine may be seized up.
DO NOT SCRAP THE CAR WHATEVER YOU DO! If you do I will have to hunt you down for your crimes against classic cars. :rotfl:0 -
SORN only came into existence in January 1998, so if a vehicle was off road before that and has remained off road (as in this case) then you/your friend do not need to worry about a SORN
What you need to do is return the V5 Registration Certificate to notify of the disposal of the vehicle. I assume that if he does have the V5 then it will be the old blue/pinky coloured one in 2 parts. Seller completes bottom slip and posts that, buyer/scrapy completes reverse side of top half of V5 and returns to DVLA.
If you cannot find V5 then a letter from the registered keeper is acceptable, need to give vehicle details, keeper's details, date of disposal and who to. Send to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR or fax to 01792 783083.
Hope that helps

Thanks M/savers for your interesting replies. From memory the vehicle was a Fiat Palio 127 - v reg - so 1979? ish dark blue, with sports steering wheel. Literally driven into a garage and left, so anyone knowing anything about cars could be onto something here! Not a classic by my standards - not Porsche or Jag etc - but guess must be worth more than £100 scrap value to someone wanting a teaching project to work on etc. Will pass replies on to Hkong and see where located for pics/paperwork.
Thanks again.

Cooooool as!! They look a little like MK1 Golfs!!
Do not scrap it. If its in good condition, then someone will definitely want it!
Here is a link to something a bit similar although a lot bigger!!

Edit: From the link above:
"the rows of fiat 127's..??..surely classics....the first commercially succesful, wel packaged 'supermini' sold by the bucketload, great fun..more so the 128...a huge success, great to drive and a trend setter... "
So there ya go!!0 -
