Choosing a new washing machine

A question that's often asked on here. Something else to consider. Hotpoint offers free parts on their machines for 5 years apparently. But they also charge £90 callout which you have to pay in advance by credit card.

With 2 - 3 callouts you have paid for a new washing machine. Bit of a con I think. Is that £90 a fixed fee and does it include VAT? It may be for the call out and the first hoiur and you may well find they charge you £40 to £50 per hour therafter. If it is a bearing for instance and they charge by the hour, the work could end up well exceeding the cost of a new washer.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

i think all these wartentees are a waste of time, they are a service from a company so they must be charging you more than it costs them... or they would go under. I would save the money for each item in a seperate jar somewhere so if one went wrong you can repair / replace straight away. Its probably easier this way as you are not tied to any one company and have the flexibility of a new unit or your own picking should you wish.0

the £90 is a fixed fee, regardless of what parts are needed and how long the repair takes. Repair is also guaranteed for a year. Ok if its a major repair like a new module but for something like a blockage then your local independent repair man would be better value. :rolleyes:0

It's not an extended warranty. Quite a lot of people I know have said they bought Hotpoint because they had free 5 year Parts Guarantee. As I understand it, you have to register your appliance when you buy it.
You then have to pay £90 callout (up front by credit card or they won't come) and you also have to pay for the engineers time.
Not such a good deal after all. :rolleyes:0 -
Hotpoint are notorius for reliablity problems, buy something better.0

The £90 is the labour charge. whether its a 10min or 2hr job. you dont have to register to get the parts guarantee. proof or purchase or serial number from machine showing under 5yrs is sufficient.0

I learned the hard way!!
I purchased a Hotpoint washing machine only to find the machine making a horrible howling noise after 18 months. (apparently a common fault!)
I then used my 5 year parts guarantee only to be told that I would have to pay the labour , which would be approx. £89.95.
I pointed out that this is over a third of the purchase price (£249.99) to replace a £10 bearing, and would not eliminate any future problems!!and all on a machine that is only 18 months old.
Needless to say they didn't reply, and so I did a bit of research and purchased one from John Lewis (which are surprisingly low priced),who also give two years parts guarantee on any washing machine, and three years parts guarantee on their own brand washing machine, plus 5 years labour, which is the one I went for.
So now I have at least three years without any cost and I would definetely steer clear of Hotpoint!!!!!!!!0 -
I would not buy a Hotpoint appliance personally.
As someone who used to deliver them, I recall an occasion where I was the 5th person to deliver a washer dryer to a customer. He told me that every one that came was damaged so I unpacked it on the back of the van and lo and behold, this one was dented.
My personal feeling is that the workforce cannot always be bothered to do what is required of them so I won't waste my money.
I would go for a Miele, if finances allowed, or a Bosch or Zanussi.0 -

That's a good price at Iceland. Don't forget to add £9.99 if you want a Saturday delivery. You WILL also need to disconnect and empty water from your old machine yourself AND connect the new one up yourself as well.
They will take away your old washing machine for £18 and also the packaging from your new one. Or you can take it to your local dump for free yourself.0
