Make sure the shutdown menu is set to switch off rather than restart, assuming Vista is similar to XP.

Also make sure there isn't a short in your box, better to be safe than sorry on that front. More likely to be a sticky switch or that the software isn't going through the shutdown process correctly as Markyt suggested.

    maybe you have a poltergeist
  • My PC went through a phase of doing this, so annoying. So after googling for about a week for the cause I discovered it was because I had plugged something into the USB port at the back of the PC tower (a router I think it was). I moved it to the front one and no more problems, it shut down and stayed shut down again.
Well I can't stand by the side

When at the desktop, press Alt+F4, do you get a menu?

It happened to my xp computer but I discovered it was because the battery was nearly dead. New battery fixed it.

I had a similar problem on mine. It was caused by the network card. I had the computer connected to the router and the "wake on LAN" option was enabled in the BIOS. As soon as the network card received any data from the router, the computer would start up.

    Worth checking the BIOS.
