Setting up a virtual private network on vista - HELP!

I am trying to set up a virtual private network with my work place. The IT guy at work has given me instructions on how to set it up at home (so I can access my work emails from home), but the instructions are for xp not Vista which we have.
It appears to be connected, but no page comes up to view - i.e. I can't actually see my emails etc.
I'm not too techy so not sure what I'm doing and if there is something extremely obvious that I am missing. I will ask IT guy at the end of the week, but I would like to sort it out this evening if possible.
Hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance.
