I am assuming as you say 'start saving' then you do not really have much if any savings at the moment.
If this is the case I would suggest you look at opening one (or two) of the regular savings accounts (offering higher rates of interest for regular monthly deposits). These are excellent vehicles for people looking to save monthly........ AND SHOULD BE CONSIDERED COMPLIMENTARY TO AN EXISITNG TOP RATE SAVINGS ACCOUNT.
By this I mean that regular savings account terms tend to run for 12 months (one year) after that the money reverts to the bank / BS normal account. It is then worth transferring this 'bulk' money in to a top paying savings account and (probably) opening another regular saver account(s).

I'd look at the Birmingham Midshires 6.50% AER e-Saver Account, £1 deposit (http://www.moneyfacts.co.uk/savings/bestbuys/internet-savings-accounts.aspx) and the Abbey Fixed Monthly Saver 7, 7.25% AER, £20 min deposit.
The following is also a good read, which in addition to being helpful branches off to other useful artcles...
