Leaky Gutter - Advice Please

Looks like I've got a few problems here what with this and a couple of my other posts :o.

Anyway.......

At the back of house the guttering is bowing in the middle and when it rains we get a constant stream of rainwater on to our conservatory.

Our conservatory has a plastic roof so it is really loud and is doing my head in .

Anyway can someone give me an idea roughly how much it may cost to get someone to replace the guttering above our conservatory (it is difficult to get to as well).

I live near Heathrow if that helps price wise.

Cheers

WJUK.

Oh yeah nearly forgot any idea how much extra to paint barge boards?

  • Hi wackojackouk,

Apologies for the last post being so short, but I typed it with one hand whilst on the phone, you need a firm with a guillotine to cut your stainless. Most steel stockists will have one and if you are lucky will do it for free!

The leaking gutter is a bit of a problem as in most cases you will need scaffolding to bridge over the conservatory, you will be looking at £200 for scaffolding, thats in Blackburn, will be slightly dearer near you I would imagine!

It is possible to get up to the gutter with a ladder by removing a couple of the sheets from the conservatory but this is not very safe!

Wouldn't bother with paint as it needs re-doing every few years.

My advice would be get someone to scaffold over the conservatory, get the barge board replaced or covered with PVC profiling, this will last for ever and then get new gutter fitted, make sure there are no joints above the conservatory, and if poss put a few extra gutter clips in that area.

If you do it your self you would be looking at £200-£300 scaffolding and about £100 materials. Get someone else and you could be looking at £600 or more.

You might be able to get the scaffolding a little cheaper, but painting the barge board is definately false economy!

I'm down in Wales and I can tell you scaffold for such a job would be at least £500 (depending upon the reach of the step) as you cannot use a tower for such a job, your best option would be to have the scaf erected and carry out repairs yourself as it sounds as you have just lost a retention clip or two, if that is the case then whilst you have the scaf up you just as well add a few extra clips to avoid the same happening elsewhere along the gutter every two metres is more than enough the clips themselves can be got in B&Q for next to nothing, I'm presuming of course the guttering is sound enough apart from the sag, have a good look around whilst the scaf is up and touch up any jobs that need doing on that elevation of your property, use the opportunity to examine your conservatory roof at the same time, plastic roof's have a tendency to become brittle after a time better to know now if it's going to need replacing and if you have the funds get it done at the same time, most importantly make sure you don't end up damaging the conservatory by falling debris whilst working on the scaf which is usually charged on a time required basis so if you can only work on a weekend time the erection so that it can come down within a week as rates are usually calculated for one week and anything over that is extra, the bulk of the cost is in the erection and dismantle, so if there is any other work needing doing in that area make the best use of it, it will save you a lot of money in the future.

    HTH

PS make sure you use a reputable firm and receive a safety certificate before going on the scaf
