AJ. I now accept that it is indeed possible to do this, and that manufacturers now produce specialist products. I wasn't until now aware of it. Having seen Clarions site, I am impressed by the finish and quality, but **personally** I wont be fitting any until I've seen and tested it. (and to be fair it's the sort of work I would leave to more experienced folks in that field, being stairs and the risks that go with them.).

As for time scale, having now chatted to the main company I used to fit for, they have done 4 such staircases to date and I'm informed they take about a day to do them depending on size and type.

randomly saw a joiners van in town: saying he did staircases, windows & doors. Rang it and he said to come to his workshop - which i did and saw staircases he was currently making. He gave me a guestimate which i was impressed with and this morning he's come and measured up.

£312 to make it and £250 to fit. incl mop handle rail.

to say i'm over the moon is an understatement. Just off to wickes and b&q to get some stain - he;s going to put the first coat on in the workshop.

Unbelievably he said he's quiet at the mo so will make them tues/weds and his joiner will fit them Friday:j yay!!

Trust 'me', it takes one fitter one day to do a set of stairs in laminate... I do them all the time.

The very first set I did had six tricky 'kite' turns and a bottom step that needed extensive work... They took a day and a half. Obviously as I now do them more often (and I wouldn't trust anybody that doesn't do them all of the time) the speed at which I do them has increased.

Anybody who says that to laminate a set of stairs will take longer is either (a) inexperienced, or (b) trying it on, and I wouldn't go with either.

I'm neither a) inexperienced or b) trying it on. That is what I would say is the average time, having spoken to many, many fitters.

Maybe you are extremely good, your work does indicate that, and very quick. I was purely giving my experience of time taken to do a set of stairs having spoken to lots of very capable fitters. I was just giving my OPINION.

    Hi,

Just thought I'd add in my two-pen'worth...

We have 'bathroom grade' laminate flooring in our 'hot tub room' (OMG - it's such a long story how we came to have one that I'll not bore you now!) - it gets fairly wet on a regular basis and has been totally flooded 3 times (twice burst pipes, once roof leak!) and is still in fine condition.
It is not too slippery - in fact the house has tiled kitchen & bathroom floors which were both there when we moved in, and I am thinking of switching both these to laminate as I've slipped over in both the kitchen and bathroom (whilst wearing sensible slippers), but never in the tub room even when it's been very wet.

I think if you shop carefully and buy the stuff which is made for the job, then it's not a problem.

I'd thought of having the stairs done - but stepkids sound like a herd of elephants even on the carpet, so would probably deafen me on laminate! - better wait until they've grown up I guess!

  • Can I throw in another option I am trying to get my head around? Quite a while ago I spotted online half-moon-shaped tread carpets, as in: only the treads are covered, so no waste on carpeted risers. You just clean and paint the stairs and stick'm on with double-sided tape. The fabric was hardwearing. Forgot to put the address in My Favourites. Can't find it back for the life of me. Only what looks like soft carpet bits, definitely not hard-wearing. Can anybody help?
