Credit card newbie query!

Hi All
Firstly my apologies if this topic can be found in other threads but was hoping for some opinions from experienced credit card users. I have never felt I have needed a credit card before as I never spend what I do not have, however I have come to the conclusion that buying goods from the internet would make more sense using a credit card rather than using a debit card for internet fraud protection purposes which I have just started to use.

So basically what would be the best card to purchase for someone who will always pay the balance in time and offer great opening account incentives.
Thanks:)
With a little bit of luck we can make it through the night!

My credit rating is perfect(I guess?), I have never borrowed anything in my life. I just want a credit card as I have been pursuaded by my work colleagues that I should purchase a credit card rather than use my current debit card as it protects me from any kind of internet fraud and other various mishaps. So I'm looking for a opening offer i.e quidco cashback etc as the APR will not affect me in anyway as I will pay the outstanding balance within the allotted time. I am looking into it now from Clariman's kind response:)

I suspect your credit rating will, therefore, be far from "perfect". This is because you don't have a track record of managing credit...and you won't have until you manage credit. Recognise the catch22 situation?

Generally the best advice is to approach your current account provider for your first credit card. This is because they know more about your financial situation than anyone.

If they turn you down, then you can approach the 'credit-builder' card providers.

Fundamentally though, are you on the Electoral Roll at your current address?

Having never borrowed anything in your life will not give you a perfect credit rating I'm afraid. It could actually hinder you and stop you getting the best available deals/cards. For a first time card, I'd suggest trying your own bank as you will already have built a relationship with them.

Credit ratings are built over time through borrowing on finance/cards, proving your stability, being on the electoral etc. Other companies like to see a history before giving credit.

EDIT : Looks like I cross-posted whilst Yboy was posting, but I think you'll get the drift.

Pardon my ignorance I'm a little out of my depth on this subject thankyou for your advice I will go through my current bank for a credit card as you echoed above. It's just I'm looking for a safer way of purchasing internet goods as paypal doesn't seem to cover as many sites as I would like:)
