Job Prospects between Universities.

Hi all,

Currently i am set to begin studying Business at UWE bristol, its an ex-poly, sitting in the middle of the league tables.

I also had an offer to study at Kent, a more respected uni.

After making my choice to study at UWE, ive been worrying about my prospects. Kent has a better reputation and its also an older uni.

im hoping to go into finance, not in the city though.

Does anyone have experience of a similar problem, or have any knowledge of what the prospects may be?

Thanks.

Big argument about it there lol. I don't think theres that much difference as long as you get a decent degree, others say otherwise.

Your prospects will be what you make of them!

Yeah sure people from top uni's get good jobs but so do people from "lower" ranked uni's - keep your head high (or down for studying!), you can only choose what is right for you.

If finance is your thing show an interest in it...is there a society at uni that discusses financial goings on? If not...form one! Get work experience, use websites to learn stock trading, CFDs, spread betting etc show a passion and you will go far.

But remember you are at uni so enjoy yourself!

Remember that the ex-polys (including UWE) have a history of building links with business and taking the needs of employers into account when designing their courses. On the whole, this has not been the case for traditional universities. This means that an ex-poly might be a better place to do a vocational subject like Business, at least if your plan is to work in the commercial sector.

i've put this on the other thread, but one way to improve anyone's prospects (there are more than enough people from top 5 unis that want to apply to finance positions, so it's a really competitive area regardless of you uni) is to get internships or go on specific days organised by companies. makes your CV stronger and also gives more of an idea of what to expect so your decision on a career is more informed. try and get your minimum 2:1 to make it easier for yourself (a 2:2 isn't the end of the world, but will make getting your foot on the ladder more difficult - not impossible by any means, but definitely a bit harder). get good work experience if possible and do all the society things everyone else has mentioned.

the thing to focus on is that your decision has been made. don't worry about what-ifs, you can't change it now (and the difference isn't all that huge anyway so not worth worrying about). wherever you get a degree, there are more graduates than jobs, so thinking now about how you can sell yourself when you finish uni puts you ahead of many other students who expect to sail into a nice job with nothing to make them stand up! good luck
