Is there any way i can find out a cars license plate number or registered address if i only know the car make and area it is in?
reason being
my car was hit tuesday morning in the early hours. There is an enormaous dent in the door and huge scratches down the side which i was not best impressed about.
Well last night a witness came forward and told us she had seen the car and driver and that hse had said to him that he needed to hand his details to us (post them through the door/leave them on the windscreen etc but he jsut drove away.
She identified the car as a cream coloured sierra and said she sees it most mornings. at around 6.15 ish. She siad at 6.22 she watched it hit our car. It wasnt around this morning though as my boyfriend went out earlier than normal and sat waiting for the car to appear and it never did.
hes driven around aour local village and cannot find the car , ive been out walking with the dog and cannot find the car - i was just wondering if there was another way to find its number plate or location so we can go and report it to the police.
any help reatly appreciated

i dont believe theres no other way to find the reg number, you could try reporting it to the police but again all they could do is keep an eye out for it,No Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
Also there would be the problem of proving who the driver was at the time.
Witness' word against the alleged driver's word, where the incident occurred in the early hours darkness, would go the alleged driver's way. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Hi sammy, I'll move this over to the Motoring Board
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.0 -
A Sierra eh? I'd put money on it being uninsured and probably driven by an unlicensed driver.0

I'd report to police. AFAIK it's an offence for them to drive away. However, police will most likely do nothing. At least if you've reported it an got a crime number you're covered in terms of insurance if you can find this driver.
I'll put my money on the car being gotten rid of due to the damage to their own car, you probably won't ever see it again.0 -
i wouldnt bother with the police they wont do anything as they cant prove he was speeding so there is no revenue for them to collect so they wont be interested.
i would keep looking for the car,get out at the same time every morning waiting and watching for the sierra,or another car that starts to keep the same routine as the sierra, this will probably be them, ask your nieghbour if they can identify him in the new car then i would set about his new car,his home and anything else of his with a hammer....work permit granted!0 -
Unfortunately without the registration number you cannot find out any details.
If you see it again and catch the reg then you can attempt to apply for keeper details on form V888, downloadable from www.direct.gov.uk/motoring and send with fee of £5.
Hope that helps

You will have to report the incident to the police anyway. They will need details of the witness too.
Also, try this site http://www.mib.org.uk/Default.htm
HTHI can say whatever I like here ... 'cos no one can see me .. ner ner ner ner ner !!!....How do you know I ain't sitting here butt naked?!?!I thunk I've made you think for a minute!:j :rotfl: :j0 -
The Police do have such databases (Hermes), but their use is reserved for serious life threatening crimes.0

Forget MIB - no injury and no driver identified. If you have fully comp insurance this also excludes you from MIB.0
