Moped / Scooter 50cc
Options
Hi guys,
been looking at this site and a few bike sites as well.
As i am a car driver passed test in 1993 and spend a fortune ( even with money saving) on petrol , tax and servicing.
I only travel 4 miles to work and 4 back sometimes do a split shift but i dont travel far each day .
As i pasted my test in 93 this allows me to drive a moped/scooter of 50cc without l plates. I do intend still to do a CBT,
Can anyone recomend a good make 50cc scooter / moped ?
( I am aware of the chinese import bikes ) and i dont want to spend money that will be wasted on a bad purchase.
I have looked at a few at a good dealer in Fife, but dont want to spend over £1200 on something that will more likely get scraped and knocked till i get confident.
Is it best to buy new rather than 2nd hand?
I have a budget of £450 that i hoped would get me a good 2nd hand scooter/moped with history.
Any help or advice would be really helpful

If you're doing a CBT anyway you aswell go for a 125 (or even a 100...), it will be a lot safer and easier to ride - and great fun too!0

Spotted this thread which interests me as I have developed a passion for getting a scooter. It might just be a phase, but anyhoo...
There were some listed in the Mail on Sunday Live magazine. I particularly liked the Piaggio ones... I don't know if I'll have that kind of budget, but humour me.
I wondered what these are like for fuel economy? The one I was looking at has a 6.5litre tank. My drive to work is currently 17 miles, but would be shorter on a scooter as that is via motorway.
Anyone know? My head's telling me I'd save money long term, but i'm not totally sure. How long would that tank last me?Everybody dies, but not everyone truly lives0 -
I used to have a 125 Gilera Runner which is made by the Piaggio group, it would do about 100 miles of various speed roads before filling up again.
I'd ride into Central London and have a commute of 25 miles each way, and the scooter was fine, you do need to consider getting some decent kit otherwise you'll feel the cold.
New Piaggios are around 2k, I'd buy a year old one with full service history which the owner has either bought a car or a bigger bike.
When your bored of it, insurance companies like eCar will accept the No Claims Bonus against a car0 -
we have just purchased a new honda scooter a 110cc lead . I am now struggeling to get a decent quote on insurance for my wife . I went on the tesco site and indeed on a few others and the same firm came up every time with the cheapest quote . £99 for third party fire and theft phone them up and they come up with a final quote of £299 . I got the link off money supermarket so thought I would phone them to tell them it was a con got no satisfaction off them at all . nothing to do with them just a link on there site but surely you don't want bad liknks on your site they were very shirty with me . So anyone know where cheap scooter insurance can be bought would be gratefull for the advice :T0
