New central heating system - how much??

We're in Somerset and need to install a new central heating system from scratch as it's an old house that had nothing. Getting gas supply run in, and now need to get some plumbers in to give us quotes for a new system. It's a 2 bed bungalow with just 1 large open plan living/kitchen room plus bathroom, so in total only 4-5 rads needs. We want a combi boiler, no hot water tank.

I'm getting british gas to quote as a 'benchmark' but will then get a couple of local plumbers. However, have no clue what is a 'reasonable' figure. Any suggestions? And what sort of questions should I ask/things to look out for?

Any help gratefully received!

Probably be safe to take the BG quote andd half it from some of the quotes others have mentioned on here!

There is a user call canucklehead (I think) whose OH is a plumber I believe - she'll probably be able to give a ball-park figure based on the number or rads you have stated and a combi?

Definitely get quotes from independents apart from BG - I think you will be surprised at the difference.
 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

Exactly the same problem, I got a quote from United Utilities for a gas meter I have but never used a gas supply into my bungalow, they sent me a long form to fill in but it mentioned £430 plus pipe.

I called in to Artizan Fireplaces in Brighouse BG install central heating for them, anyway got a call from them the guy confirmed £430 was correct for a gas meter and said as I have steel pipes they will be rust inside so needs replacing with plastic more cost.

He said work on £1000 for a good boiler in your kitchen in a box Worster / Vailient one of the diy stores were doing a free drill with a boiler he said the drill is worth more than there boiler.

He said around £4000/4500 + gas supply

Good evening: My ears were burning...guilty on all counts;) To answer OP's query....cost depends on a number of factors eg. make and model of combi, if the quotation follows 'Best Practice' (detailed in this Energy Savings Trust guide ..use this as a reference when your CORGIs visit for a quotation ) , where you want the boiler located (loft installation will cost more as additional requirements need to be met)... your CORGI should also check mains flow/pressure (might be too low to get best out of a combi, mains might need an upgrade if undersized or lead in composition). As an example my OH has just started a job in Surrey (Greater London)...2 bed maisonette, removal of warm air heating system, installation of Vaillant Ecotec Plus 831 combi with wireless programmable roomstat, standard flue, 5 rads plus towel rail, TRVs, all pipework in copper, new gas supply from meter, powerflush of installation, notification to Building Control for £4400....maybe knock 10-15% off that for your location.

Let us know how you get on.
