Carers allowance-for each other

Hello my wife and i are retired through ill health, she recieves carers allowance for me as i have brittle Diabetes and have hypo's in the strangest places and at any time she needs to be with me for safety. She in her own right is not well, she has arthritus all over her body, and has had several operations recently,----My question is can i claim carers allowance in retrospect for looking after her.

If she receives the DLA or AA to allow someone to claim the CA then yes it could be you and you could both claim for the other.

I would imagine that your claims would be looked at though to check you aren't both saying that you need the same care (for example if you are both saying you can't do one thing so the other does it for them that may raise a red flag - however as you both have completely different disabilities it shouldn't be a problem)
  • i`m assuming here that you are both below retirement age,if this is so and you are both receiving dla at middle or higher rate care then yes you can get carers allowance, however if you are also on income support and no other adults live with you then claiming severe disabilty premium would get you around twice as much cash as both of you claiming carers allowance,if you need any clafication on this just post again

You should be aware that CA is a non contributory benefit that cannot be put into payment if certian other benefits, such as IB or RP, are already in payment.

Then if you claim CA, it cannot be paid whilst IB is in payment.

However, as you are aged 60, you should consider claiming Pension Credit-(Income Support for the over 60's- but more generous).

May I ask a question please?

We are on IS and OH receives CA for me. Would we be better off not claiming CA and receiving the SDP...I dont know how it works:confused:

    Thanks ever so much.

You won't be able to claim SDP as you have another adult living with you (your OH) inless he is also in receipt of MR/HR DLA

I can see your problem, I would contact a Welfare Rights Officer or CAB, the reason being, sometimes Benefits crossover and you lose in one hand what you are given in the other.I understand your need to be cautious.Good Luck !
  • Just thought I would ask anyway.

    Thanks
