Paying off old CC debts and defaults on your credit record?

Hi All - sorry but this is a bit of a long one, need some advice quite soonish tho so anything you can give me helps
So the story goes - me and my girlfriend are moving into a new flat on Sat 3rd May - We're renting through Leaders who have strict credit check policies. They have checked my credit and found an old CCJ that I didn't know about, at an old address I haven't lived at for 6-7 years. The CCJ was for £278. I called the Northampton court, found out the amount (£278) called the solicitors dealing with it (Brian Carter & Co) and found that yes it is an old debt - which I do actually owe,
When I called the solicitors I paid the £278 straight away over the phone and they said they would send me out a note for it - brilliant I can show this to Leaders so they will let me into the house.
Now the actual problem is: Brian Carter & Co offered me the opportunity to pay off the rest of the debt (£1250) at a cut price rate of £650, or to pay in instalments the whole £1250. I have double checked with Brian Carter & Co and they told me that if I pay the whole thing now (£650) then then they will just send a note to the court saying it's satisfied, it will stay on my credit record for another 3.5 years - but - importantly - will not be marked as a default.
Now I am worried that whatever they say - it would be marked as a default anyway - is there any way I can guarantee that it doesn't? would I have any come back if they did mark it as a default? Should I ask Experian?
Any advice is gratefully received
(BTW this is the last debt I had after paying of assorted £15K.. this one slipped through the net...)
