Going to Stamford & breaking train journey at Peterborough

I'm planning to visit Stamford next week and hoping to break my journey at Peterborough on the way back for a bit more shopping. The ticket I'm getting says it allows a break of journey. So a couple of questions:
Does a break of journey mean you can leave the station itself?
How it work if the station has those barriers where you have to insert your ticket to leave the station?

Yes you can leave the station.
In theory the barriers will work and give you your ticket back.
In practice it would be better to go through the manned gate. If the barriers are in operation there HAS to be one.0 -
Thanks Dzug. Last time I went to Cambridge it guzzled my outgoing ticket on the way out (and everyone elses it seemed) not a problem then as I wasn't using it as a break of journey. I'll go for the manned gate then.0

I stopped off at Peterborough a few weeks back and there was no barrier, just walked out and then back in again.;)0

There are no barriers in peterborough(there's barely any station guards), go out of the station turn right walk over the foot bridge and straight into a very large shopping centre.'Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship'. -Benjamin Franklin.0
