go for it! I know where I was in my last job, volunteers often came in to help out so they could see if they wanted a career in nursing.
If you wanted to be paid - have you thought about being an auxiliary? It's not glamorous in any shape or form being an auxiliary but is a good way to 'get in' and then move on to nurse training - and get paid!
