locking metal gates?

is it possible to fit number pad locks to metal double gates?
or can anyone recommend other easily accessible locking mechanisms?
I want to lock the gates for general security, burglary deterrant and to keep dogs and kids in and strangers out, as the gates open staright onto the street.
We've tried a padlock and key, and combination lock, but there were a bit fiddly. We also have to provide access for neighbours with right of way.
I've seen automated systems, but they seem very expesive, and perhaps overkill and more fiddly stuff to maintain. We've already for external lights with sensors that don't work as they should.
thanks
I'd be most grateful for any suggestions.:j

I use a cheap bike lock£2 but for added security you could get a heavy duty one, weigh a ton about £35.0

thanks - good money saving idea if you don't have to provide access for neighbours.0
