Have you tried recalling a copy, if your library will allow this?
We can reserve books that are out and they will recall them, or at the very least, prevent people renewing their loan.
If you have tried and the 6 weeks is because there is a waiting list of people, perhaps it is worth pointing this out at the library anyway, and asking if they will consider reducing the loan time for a few weeks, to give everyone a chance?
If nothing else, it sounds as though they need to get a few more copies in.
They will likely point out that it is never wise to leave such important material until the last minute, but I guess you know that already!
Another thought: How well do you get on with your tutors? Some are prepared to loan their own copy to students they know well.0 -
Do you have a university bookshop? If you do, they normally sell second hand copies for much cheaper than new ones. If not, you could always try greenmetropolis.com, I've seen quite a few textbooks on there!0

University libraries would normally put a book on a 24 hour loan system if it's in demand and has been requested by lots of students.
Durham uni used to have a 4 hour loan section where you weren't allowed to remove the book from the library!!
Just get your friends (not on your course!) to request it too, the the library recalls it.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
thanks for the replies. i already have a few of the other books for the course out but was told this one was the best...emailed the lecturer and got a reply saying it was the most simple and the one i have is better
so i think im sorted now, but getting nervous already!
as for recalling the books, they all have requests out on them and should have been due back two weeks ago. i think people have just decided having the book for longer is more important that paying the library fines, even if its unfair on the other people in the class.0 -
Glad you're sorted now.
Re recalling books: Hmm, people do that at my uni too. But, if you pester the library staff they will start phoning them and asking them to post it back etc. Usually shifts people a bit!!
It's annoying though isn't it?
I have to admit, I've taken a book back two days late because I am 30 miles away and it was cheaper to pay the fine than drive all the way to uni! I wouldn't do it for more than that though as I always think of how much I hate waiting for a book to come back in!
I did think about making a suggestion to my library that they start hiking the fees for books that have been requested. They have a higher charge for overdue short loan books so I can't see why they can't add a pound or two when the books are needed by someone else.0 -
