is it better to get turkish lira here or wait to exchange it when you get there?is the consensus that we should take 90% of holiday money in sterling and the rest in local currency even for paying in supermarkets/bars/restaurants?

Yes, most, if not all shops and bars will take sterling, in fact I found it more of a hassle to pay in Lira at times as the shops and bars had their prices in sterling and had to convert it to Lira
