What is the difference between direct and indirect tanks?
I am developing a 2 bedroom coach house with no loft space. The house is gutted and has no mains gas. We have a bonded plastic tank for heating oil that looks to be relatively new that I would like to use, although the previous boiler has been removed. It is just myself, my wife and our 12 year old son living here (when we get out of our static home!) so will require enough water for a bath and a couple of showers without freezing. I am looking to purchase an oil boiler that will be powerful enough to centrally heat our house with large conservatory and am looking at OSO 170 litre Indirect tanks for £770 to fit under the stairs. Does this sound right for the job and price and any recommendations for a boiler? help please!!!!!!!!!

I don't think anyone provides direct HW cylinders these days. The difference is that a direct cylinder has water that has come directly through the boiler to provide HW to the taps, while an indirect cylinder has a heat exchanger inside the cylinder which keeps the boiler fluid separate from the HW. You can't have a direct cylinder if you are using the boiler to heat the central heating as well as the CH fluid needs to have an inhibitor in it to prevent rusting.
We have a 210 litre OSO cylinder with 2 heat exchangers (one for solar heating which has just gone in). Our system is unvented which means you get mains pressure in the hot taps and don't have a cold water tank to provide the pressure. The OSO is a very good unit for an unvented system.
We also have a Vokera boiler (gas not oil) and can recommend that and Worcester Bosch but I'm sure there are plenty of others out there that would be cheaper.0
