New Fiat Multipla Keys - Rip Off!

Hi,

I have a 51 Multipla. One of my keys has snapped and the other is hit and miss on the beeper, so I tend to manually lock it in case I fail to 'unbeep' the car and get locked out. Time to get new keys. Went to Fiat dealer and they quoted £180 for the first key and £90 for the second (only pay the programming costs once). £270 for 2 new keys!!!!

Thought, stuff that, so went on a multipla forum and someone suggested going to Timpsons Key Cutters, they have a box that cuts and codes. Well they do, and the cost of a key is just £35, but they can't 'cut' a key for my particular year, their handbook says 'refer to dealership'.

I'm at a loss. Just can't bring myself to pay £270 for relacement keys, it's an absolute rip off. Does anyone have any ideas how I can get new keys?

Hope you can help.

Sharon

See if you can buy a blank from the dealer and get someone else to cut and program it.

Agree, it is a rip off re price of keys etc. but there isn't a whole lot one can do in these situations.

Sometimes, you can get the just the casing and put the 'works' in to that - but keep finding that the later keys are now 'moulded' into the casing which limits where you can purchase them from - the dealerships....

    Its life I'm afraid.

Makes the new 'push button start' vehicles more appealing - but, what can go wrong there I wonder?? :o

I've had am 03 Multipla key cut by an independant key cutter, but they couldn't clone the immobiliser code :-(

Handy to open the doors, though won't be able to drive away unless I disable the immobiliser.

Fiat is one of the most expensive key replacements. Whenever buying always make sure the blue key is there and you have a full compliment of keys.

There are three types of people in the world, those who can add up and those who can't.
  • If the blipper on one of your keys is 'hit and miss', its very likely the button is failing, or there are cracks in the PCB.

This would be an extremely simple fault for anyone handy with a soldering iron to repair. Ask around your family and friends, if theres anyone you know with electronics skills they'll be able to look at it for you.

Really they're extremely cheap and simple devices, nothing complicated about them.

Can't you just use the beeper from the broken key and get a new key cut without having it coded?

  • I was told a blank key from fiat is 81 pounds...extraordinary, I'm sure they don't cost that much...a programmed and cut one £150. Don't know what to do, it really is too much money isn't it? I know of a mobile cutter, but only one.
Any one been having any luck? :-)

  • I managed to get one done under a warranty - but it took a fight - they claimed (in writing!) that keys were not covered as they could easily be danaged by being carried in pockets and handbags - I retorted that in that case they were not fit for purpose and they gave in and sent me a cheque.

For the beeper it is a known fault that the using the 'switch' can fracture the solder holding it on to the circuit board. Owners report success opening up the keys and re soldering the switch back on.
    I think....
