Lots of people muddle Social Services with Social Security (now Benefits Agency). I always thought it was a mistake to name either of them something with the initials SS!

That was my thinking as well actually. Even though they are the DWP now, many people still refer to them as Social Security.

Hopefully OP will come back and clarify...did they have a ID badge on when they came?

My wife has nothing to hide, this was a surprise visit It may be social security , she already went through the tribunal system a few years back and the SS was severely criitised in the treatment my wife received from them.
I enquired if this is normal practice. If a vulnerable adult was ie someone suffering from depression was approached this way if could badly effect them.
The caller said it was new policy and SS was hiring extra staff to do this. My wife was her first ever visit

Not my intention to stir up a debate

The debate was nothing to do with you and completely off topic...sorry about that.

It sounds like it would be 'Social Security' rather than Social Services. Did they say they were from the Department of Work and Pensions by any chance?

I wasn't aware that they were doing this but as you say if you have checked, it must be a new thing. And the people that have nothing to hide, like your wife, will have nothing to worry about. I think it may be to do with the 'shake up' of the benefits system that they are starting this.

Because they claim they can't walk 10 yards without assistance, claim all the benefits and then - like Conor says - are out washing the car (or whatever). Meanwhile decent people who deserve the benefit have to do appeal after appeal just to get the money.

DLA is one of the most abused benefits in my opinion - bring on the changes in October I say.

there will be NO changes to DLA in october,in fact there are no planned chANges at all to DLA

That was my understanding also. Perhaps Loopy is getting confused with the changes to IB?

THERE appears to be alot of confusion on this thread,im still abit worried about the original post,i contribute to a number of benefit boards and have never heard of a "surprise" visit re:DLA,in fact the only time they visit is if they do a home medical visit, and thats only after you not being able to go to them for the medical, and even then you need a letter from your gp,so as i say i`m more than surprised to read about an unannounced home visit.
Lets face it even the dwp compliance teams send you a written invitation to attend
