    See post 2, your friend needs an adsl model, eg dg834g, might be cheaper at amazon.

    be careful about buying 'used' though, they might have a custom firmware or settings that could cause grief to override.

    I would recommend the linksys range, they are very robust and high build quality, they are CISCO network hardware aimed at the general consumer, I have had mine running without reboot or error for 10 months now. Oh and they are priced fairly as well.
