i'd actually like to see it all or nothing -why should it be just shops that are open on Sundays what about doctors, dentists, solicitors etc?

i can see what your saying, my fear is we will end up a twenty four hour everything open all the time. would be sad for family life to me.

Personally, I would not like to see Sunday opening hours extended. I worked in retail for 7 years and as Spendless has correctly pointed out, the hours can be very long. I worked for a large high street department store who put a lot of pressure on staff to work long hours.

The restricted operating hours on a Sunday are there to protect staff. Some stores will have their staff working all hours if they can get away with it. ::)

Regarding the "viewing time" issue. The store I worked for used to do this, but we used to tell customers as they were coming in that we wouldn't be able to process their purchases until 11am. I can't understand why other stores can't inform their customers of this, especially when most of them have P.A systems at their disposal!
    Please call me 'Kazza'.
  • In fairness the store did have a notice up about the viewing time (many people like me didn't read that bit !) & there were tannoy announcements (which sounded rather like the ones you hear at train stations i.e "pner ner ner mip bip ner ner" - or something along those lines !)

I just find it silly to open the store and not sell - They could choose to open @10:00-16:00 like all the other surrounding shops.

Or is this too sensible ?
  • The whole Sunday trading laws thing is so pointless and should be scrapped. I have 2 24hour supermarkets near me, and they aren't open 24/7 because of these laws, they close at 10pm on Sat and open at 11-5 on the sunday then close and open at 8am on Monday.

I'm very supportive of traditions, but something like this doesn't really make it as one in my eyes. I entertain a lot of foreign clients and they simply do not understand why a 24hour shop closes....to them that's just weird.
    Sense is not common.

As you are all no doubt aware by now, this half hour 'for viewing' is a way around the law to get another 30 minutes opening time.

Those who complain about blockages at tills only have themselves to blame for trying to be clever and get in and out early.

Personally, and I am in retail, we should go back to the old days and shut shops on Sunday and revert back to a 'family day'

For heaven's sake, isn't 6 days a wekk enough to go shopping. Our parents managed it, why can't we do the same.

There are a lot of people who just wander around stores on Sunday because they have nothing better to do.

I have had people come in to the store minutes before we close at 4pm. When you tell them you are shutting shortly, some can be quite abusive. Why on earth they do not come out earlier if they intend to buy. Think of the staff who want to get home. It is often the case that thos who enter a store just before closing are thos who have just enjoyed a lingering Sunday lunch.

Think of those who have been denied this.

My mother left school at 13.  Her mother left school and stated work at the age of nine.  What our parents may or may not have done is not necessarily a guide as to what we ought to do now.

No hint here of the customer always being right.

The justification for not working on Sundays is religious; it's supposed to be a day of rest as defined in the bible.
With supposed separation of church and state, surely this is a violation of the multi-culturalism that the UK professes?

    Agreed

Those who complain about blockages at tills only have themselves to blame for trying to be clever and get in and out early.

The blockages were caused by the 1/2 hr viewing time as everybody had been let in the store & not wishing to view stood around for 1/2 an hour like lemmings.

Better than opening & not allowing customers to buy !

Some of the older generation would probably have liked to have been given the opportunity to shop on a Sunday - given the choice, if they could have afforded it that is !

There are a lot of people who just wander around stores on Sunday because they have nothing better to do.

True..but at least they are getting exercise ! Which is better than them stuffing their faces on a Sunday roast then sitting down to watch Columbo repeats whilst getting ever-increasing-balloon-buttocks ;D

I have had people come in to the store minutes before we close at 4pm. When you tell them you are shutting shortly, some can be quite abusive. There is no excuse for abuse but the store should still provide a level of flexibility towards their customers. Why on earth they do not come out earlier if they intend to buy. Think of the staff who want to get home. It is often the case that thos who enter a store just before closing are thos who have just enjoyed a lingering Sunday lunch. 'Lingering Sunday Lunch' That's a bit old fashioned ? maybe these are the older generation shoppers who are making up for all that lost shopping time they were deprived of ;D

Think of those who have been denied this. Ok will do - But as long as they think of the customer in return !

I agree with the train of thought that says Sunday opening should be abolished altogether. We do not need the shops to be open on a Sunday - it is completely unneccesary. I know a couple of people who work in retail and who are pretty much forced to work Sundays. This leaves them a day off through the week - when their kids are at school!
Sundays I remember were at the park, going for walks, or visiting relatives with my family then home for a nice roast. Nothing wrong with that as far as I can see.
