Sprucing up a kitchen

Afternoon all,

I am about to move in with my other half, and although his flat is an absolute bargain (rented), it could do with a bit of tarting up!

His landlady won't pay for any cosmetic improvements, so was wondering if anyone had any ideas for brightening up a shabby, dated kitchen without investing loads of money in someone else's flat!

We haven't got a huge amount of money to spend, but as a comparible property (with spangly kitchen) in the area would cost us £3-400 extra a month in rent we don't mind forking out a bit, especially as we're likely to be there for at least a year.

I'm thinking mainly about something like new cupboard doors, does anyone know of a good place to get reasonable quality, cheap doors/drawer fronts?

Or any other ideas to make it look a bit better?!

Thanks
Fizz

Ps. If you're wondering, we will get permission for any improvements with the landlady, and can store the old doors if she doesn't like the ones we chose!

Do you have a pic of the kitchen?

Replacement doors do not seem to be economical IMHO. I was havinga look yesterday out of interested and was flabberghasted! You can buy entire units for the price of a regular 600 door!

If it has wood doors you can paint them quite easily. Change the worktop (the cheap one in Ikea is £25 and the nicest one IMO!) and sink/taps perhaps, throw some lino down on the floor etc. You can tile over tiles. Don't paint tiles; I don't care what anyone says, it looks awful.

You have to get permission to do this sort of stuff or you'll find his deposit ends up funding a new kitchen for the landlady

    Thanks,

I'll have a look at worktops/taps etc. Any idea how much they might cost to install? Also, how much to get lino laid?

No pics at the mo, I'll see if I can get one done.

If it helps the floor space is about 2m x 3m, with cupboards along 2 walls. Free standing gas cooker with 2 base and 2 wall cupboards on one wall (plus big floor to ceiling larder type thing); sink plus 2 base cupboards and space for wm on the other.

The cupboard doors aren't wood - they're the ones with a plasticy coating on them (don't know what that's called, sorry!)

    Cheers

Jut put in an ikea kitchen, we went for the white £25 Pragel worktops , cant fault them, the joiner that fitted them (£110) couldn't believe they were that cheap.
