Manual Choke on Cars
Options
Hi,
this prob sounds dumb but can some1 give me a quick explanation of how to operate a manual choke car? i.e do i pull the choke out when the ignition is turned on then leave it a min, set off push half way in then all way in after another min? (thats what im doing at moment but it gets very jerky pulling out at openings) sorry again to sound stupid but i drove automatic choke last time round.
NJO.

The choke ajusts the air/fuel ratio in orer to make starting a cold engine easier.
In my experience there is no hard fast rule as each car is different.
Try pulling it out half way then trying to start it. f it starts first tme remebr this for the next time.
You should try then redce the choke back until the enigne warms up and you drive the car nromally without any choke.

You'll only need to pull the choke part-way in summer (assuming you're having one where you live...), fully out in winter. A lot less or even no choke if you're re-starting after a shopping break as the engine takes some time to cool. If it starts to chug when you're driving, just pull the choke out a bit.
As to how long to leave the choke out - depends on whether the car has a belt-driven fan or an electric one. If belt-driven, it will be sucking cold air regardless of engine and outside temperature so you'll need the choke out longer - possibly 5-10 mins in winter. With an electric fan, the engine will warm up faster - say 5 mins in winter. If you have a temperature guage, should be able to run without choke around 1/2 way between cold and normal.0 -
The choke just adjusts the amount of air the carb gets, if you pull the choke all the way back it closes and gives the carb pure petrol.
It shouldn’t take long to warm up and should tick over after a couple of minutes! If it doesn’t tick over after a few minutes then get it booked in to a carburetor centre for a tune up.
Let the car warm up on its own and don’t keep hitting the gas like a lot of dopes do, that’s what the choke is for to warm up the car.
If the car isn’t responding properly then the carb may need cleaning adjusting, also invest in some new spark plugs and leads.
Every time I bought a new car I went out and bought
Spark plugs
Leads
Distributor cap
Oil
Oil filter
Air filter
New battery
And my cars never let me down onceI'm not poor i'm just skint0 -
when you pull the choke out the carburettor feeds more petrol than air which richens the mixture and helps to start the car when the engine is cold.
when i had a manual choke car in the winter i pulled the choke fully out. In warm/summer weather just pulled it half way. I will then start the car. Do not press the accelerator. If the car does not start then just slightly press the accelerator. Once the car is started you will notice it is revving at high speed. I then slowly push the choke in a bit till the engine is running at lower revs but smoothly. Then i will drive off. Once the car is warmed up slightly you can slowly press the choke fully in. What i did is once i moved off i join the main road and cruising i then push the choke as far as i can. Will stop pushing the choke if the engine is sputtring a bit. The engine is still cold then.
Note that while driving on choke you are using more petrol but it can help you get off quickish from traffic lights like i used to in my old pug 205.Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problemsWell at least i learn something on the way
