Sun Cream for dogs

With the warm wheather (hopefully) coming up, I have a white Bull Terrier and was wondering, is there any need for suncream for her......?

If so are there any particular ones to use ?

i use suncream on my bulldogs as they have white and pink bits on there face,

a bull terrier has sensitive skin so i would put suncream on.

i use factor 25 kids suncream i find the thick white cream ones best.

I tend to suggest a children's sunblock, the spray bottles are particularly easy to use. Brand doesn't matter too much and this applies to cats with white ears as well. They are very prone to skin cancer on the tips of their ears and need the sunblock more than most.

Yes but I would urge caution with spray, especially anywhere near the eyes - if possible, don't use a spray directly on a cat, it'll scare the crap out of it! Spray on your hands and rub on areas you want to protect.

When I say spray - I mean the pump action ones, not an aerosol. I'm not sure I have seen an aerosol sun tan lotion. Most cats wouldn't bother with a pump spray (like Frontline Spray) and you can spray it straight onto the ear flap. Nice, easy and convenient
  • I would advise sunblock if at all in doubt - sunburnt white animals are terrible - I once clippered our white fluffy cat when I was a kid, as he had got mats in his fur (he was an odd furball type of a cat with extra toes!) and never even thought about sunburn - the poor thing came back bright, vivid, sunburnt pink - my grannie smothered him with acriflex (burns cream) and he seemingly suffered no long term ill effects....

However, I felt very very guilty!!

Better to be safe then sorry!

I'm sure Snowman has had to deal with pets with suburnt/cancerous body parts, it's usually ears ... I have had quite a few who have come my way who have had an ear, both or part of removed. Have to say these pets are remarkably resilient. I try to make owners aware right from kitten/puppy stages, but sometimes they think I'm joshing them.

    Hi,
We have a White Bull Terrier and put sun cream on her every year when the sun comes out. They sun worship like nothing else if you let them!

I use normal high factor suncream, and if it's a spray one I put it on my fingers first, so I don't spray her eyes.

Make sure you have a good covering of her hook (snout), backs of ears, tummy and armpits.

I use kids sunblock on my weimy's nose, as it goes from pink to red otherwise. He hates getting it put on and ends up backing himself into a corner in order to avoid it and also tries to rub it off, so make sure you get a good covering, hes been known to rub his face on furniture to remove it. He did once try to rub his face on the rose tree and ended up with a thorn in his beak :rotfl: daft dog.

are there any kinds of sunblock you'd avoid using on a cat / dog in case they licked it off and it didn't agree with them?
