I was given the message:
Is it just me or should that be 'were unsuccessful'. I would enjoy the irony if I was right. The reason why you was unsuccessful was that we had a very high standard of application and unfortunately you just missed out.

not sure but if it was 'were unsuccessful' wouldn't it have to read:I was given the message:

The reason why you were unsuccessful is that we had a very high standard of application and unfortunately you just missed out.

"The reason why you were unsuccessful was that we had a very high standard of applications and unfortunately, you just missed out."?
It's a rather awkward sentence in any case, isn't it? "Missed out" sounds slightly daft, as though they never even saw the application, or the other applications pushed it into the shredder in a murderous fit; personally, I wouldn't want to work for anywhere that sends out official post with grammar that's that bad on it - you never know what else they muck up or how sloppy they are in other ways.0 -

Maybe they meant to put "the reason why your application was unsuccessful was...."??
If you look on monster job thingy online, some of the job ads have really bad spelling mistakes in, and yet are after someone with a masters degree etc...Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
In my opinion, that's cause for humour and not dejection. It reminds me a lot of the man who turned me down for a job at B&Q last summer. Whilst I am not the slightest bit elitist, it did tickle me to read exactly how he worded my rejection given the quality of applicant for which he stated he was looking. Two weeks later, I get two job offers from law firms! Good things come...0

I'd cry that it's taken this long for anyone to get back to me seeing as most of the grad stuff goes before xmas...0

reflect on what may have been the reasons for the rejections and use the rejection to become even more determined to get something. I received offers and rejections - each employer looks for something different.

i would contact them and ask if it is possible for some more specific feedback about your application - the worst that can happen is nothing, and it may help to know what was the (tiny) weakness they found in your application compared to others.
don't be upset - at least they said no - the ones that only contact you if you're successful wound me up. i understand a lot of people apply, but an email sent out to a list wouldn't kill them!! i think i had a total of 13 rejections on my third year, although none of them were quite so badly written!!:happyhear0 -

Unilever - end of June
Network Rail - April
Yorkshire Water - June
HSBC - March
Ericsson - Still able to apply
The one I have already heard back for was applied for in February. So not really.
Thanks for all the messages guys. It turns out one of my friends did get an interview for this place and the interview was a complete shambles. They are supposed to want the highest calibre students for an IT graduate scheme and they couldn't get a powerpoint slide working! The psychometric test he did went round in an infinite loop! He has already said that if they offer him a job he will simply refuse it. Rumour is they're 'competitive' salary is £18k. Don't want to come across as elitist but thats not exactly what I was expecting.0 -
sorry should have said most of the decent grad stuff
