I wassearching round for a 28inch tv and found that there was a huge variance between John Lewis' price and other retailers so I asked them to price match it.
Whilst initially saying they would check and revert to me, when they looked they claim as the tV is not in stock in the shop they won't match it . They also claim the price was £495 whilst when I did a general enquiry I was told it was £335.00.
i then mentioned i had seen it eslewhere at a shop caled premier Av in Brum. However I hadn;t even finished saying this before i was told that john Lewis didn't price match this company as prices weren't displayed in the shop.
does anyone know if they have successfully gotten away with a price match at this retailer.
I'd welcome your views as i believe they should have honoured it as they could phone up and check themselves.

I work for John Lewis and can tell you that this is correct. The rules, as explained in a leaflet available in store or to download here ( http://www.johnlewis.com/jl_assets/pdf/undersold.pdf )state the the retailer must be comparable. Firstly it has to be a regular shop, so no mail order, internet, market stalls or members clubs (such as Matalan or Costco). Secondly the retailer must display prices in store so any shop where you actually have to ask someone for the price is excluded. Finally, their in-stock position must be similar ie. if John Lewis have it in stock, so must the other retailer, or if John Lewis say 3 weeks to order, the other retailer must be able to match or beat that. Sometimes delivery costs and extended warranties will also be taken into account, as these are free at John Lewis.
I'm sure you'll agree these rules are fair! There's a spreadsheet on the JLP intranet detailing which retailers will and will not be matched for each store, and for what reasons. I'm next working on Sunday so will check then.0 -
Worth looking in different John Lewis stores. eg We found a particular TV was cheaper in one store than another and had no problem ordering at the lower price.0

Why do you want to buy from JL if they are more expensive? Just buy from the cheapest supplier.
Somerfield had some Bush 28" widescreens for 129 pounds, but Bush are not a great quality make. and my Somerfield had sold out a week or 10 days later.0 -
People want to buy TVs from John Lewis as they include a 5 year warranty and don't charge for delivery, and are generally considered to offer good after sales service. There's also no chance of them going bust any time soon, which is often not the case with companies offering significantly lower prices than the competition. If someone can get all this at the same price, why not? But the people I really don't understand are the ones who buy from Currys and Comet! Not cheap, terrible service, extortionate "coverplans".0

I agree with zappomatic. I always try to buy through John Lewis with price match.

I've done price matches many times with JL and they have always been very helpful and fast. They've never refused, I guess you just need to check they accept the store you want to match. Def good buying from them with the free 5 yr warranty too.Sense is not common.0

I won't be able to deliver that information on Sunday now as I'll be without internet access for a week from Sunday afternoon. I'll update when I'm back.0

Don't work for them or have any interest in them but would say that in all my dealings with them they have been a fair and decent company to deal with and are very competitive...When my wife wanted a new cooker we found yes we could get it £15 cheaper from some internet only company in Scotland, but in the end bought off John Lewis because the thought of getting some dented non working oven from a company that only had an E mail address just wasn't worth the hassle..I know that when we had problems with a carpet a few years ago we had purchased from John Lewis they dealt with the complaint very fairly and reasonably...I'm all for money saving but think you have to weigh up all the pros & cons of who you buy off!The Early bird may catch the worm ...but its the second mouse that gets all the cheese!0
