Lawn Striping
Options
I own a Flymo 330 howermower and want to achieve stripes in my lawn. I know its not possible with this type of mower, however, wondered if I could achieve the same effect if I suppliment my mower with a garden roller such as these;

Would they achieve the same effect and be just as good? I need to buy one anyway to level off my topsoil prior to sowing my new lawn.
Thanks!

The best way to get defined stripes in your lawn is to cut the grass at different heights.
You could try this with the 330 by doing one line of your lawn with no pressure placed on the mower, for the next line push the mower down into the grass so the cut is more than the previous line. When you finish you should see distinguished lines.
You can buy mowers with height adjustment so they cut the grass at different heights, which makes striping easier to achieve.
I don't see how a roller can help though other than flattening your grass.0 -
I agree foxwales' method of striping would acheive the desired striping, however you will also be left with uneven grass heights.
The roller mentioned will create striping by gently folding the blades of grass in one direction and on the return pass will fold in the opposite diection, thus creating a striped effect when viewed from afar.0 -
Thanks for the tips. I need a roller to level the garden anyway - so if it does the striping - think this sounds like a good option. Certainly will save buying a new lawn mower when the 330 is more than adequate!

hmm just be careful with rollering as it will make the lawn more compact then youll be having stripes of moss and poor drainage!0
