I guess the point is that NatWest's advertising is BS. They claim to let you ring the branch direct, but actually you just get someone in the call centre. Nationwide are the same, they'll give you the branch number but you actually get through to their call centre.

Abbey branches will give out their direct number, and you will only get through to the branch, not a call centre. Don't know if anyone else does this.

The number DOES get you through to the branch, but if it rings so many times (indicating everyone is busy) or the branch is closed you are put through to the support team, of course they do this or customers would be angry they had to re dial the call centre.

Can't satisfy everyone!
