How to chisel 30mm into concrete floor ?

i All,

I need to dig about 30mm into out kitchen floor for a length of about 2m. So Corgi guy can come in and lay gas pipes. It's a 1930s Semi so not sure if it's a suspended floor. One side feels like concrete and the other half sounds like timber.

Tried digging the concrete out using a hammer and chisel but didn't get very far.

Which of these tools are best :

1) - H-Duty Chasing Machine - Hilti

Might be an over kill as i'm only chasing a length of about 2m

2) Hammer drill

3) Or steel saw/angle grinder

An angle grinder will do it easily enough. A chaser will be neater and quicker, but probably unnecessary.

    thanks,

Any advice on the type I need.

Presume i'll be better off buying once instead of hiring.

Also would the hammer drill do the job as I need one of these anyway :-)

You will need something to make the lines ie an angle grinder, and something to take out the concrete between the two lines. A hammer drill would be good. You can get a cheap angle grinder for less than £20. Prob cheaper than reenting, even if you only get this job out of it. Be prepared for the dust though!

£20 angle grinder from Wickes, cut the edges with that. Once you've got a start on the hole than hammer and chisel will work, along with loosening up by drilling a lot holes with a hammer drill.

My OH uses an SDS drill for doing jobs like this.

Bit of info here > http://www.diyfaq.org.uk/powertools/sds.htm He loves the bluddy thing :rotfl:says they are far superior to your average hammer drill. You can get them from Screwfix.

BTW, did your plumber tell you to go down 30MM? I'm sure ours told us 45mm minimum...mind you, we were laying 22mm in plastic sleeving then into the concrete

B&Q do a SDS drill for less than £40 and for DIY use its great

ALDI have got a very cheap hammer action drill for £10 I think. If you have lots of work you probably will need to spend more.

Just so you know an SDS drill has a far more aggressive hammer action than a normal drill. Great if you need to drill through walls etc no good for hanging pictures. The big benifit is that you can lock the spindle to use the drill as a chisel. This will be ideal for the job you want to do. You will need to grind the edges first though.

great tnks guys exact replies I was looking for.

    However little confused now.

Would the SDS hammer drill be sufficient by it's self or would It be better to use an angle grinder first to make the markings. Don't really want dust all over the kitchen else misses will be using the angle grinder on me.:D

you could have a go without grinding first but it will a real mess the channel not the kitchen lol.
Never used a chaser so I don't know how much dust that will create but I can't see it being a clean job.

Seal the doors off and go for it. Use PPE though
