  • Registry cleaners are more dangerous than useful. I'd recommend you stay away from them.

Here are a few suggestions to speed up the PC

    (1) Increase your RAM to atleast 512MB. 1 GB is preferable for XP, and 2 GB for Vista. This is the most important thing you can do to improve performance in your case.

    (2a) Uninstall unwanted programs.
(2b) Do a disk cleanup to get rid of junk files.

    (3) Run a full anti-virus and anti-malware scan with the latest definition files. This is critical.

    (4) Run chkdsk /f once. This, only as a precaution.

    (5) Defragment your hard drives. In fact, I recommend an auto defragmenter
that can defrag in the background in real-time. Unlike the hassles of scheduling a defrag every time, you just have to install and turn on the auto defragmenter. It will defrag in the background whenever necessary and you can use the PC as normal. Since you have been using only 256MB RAM so far,I'd guess that the system has been paging to the drive quite often and you have fragmented page files and other files which can slow down performance. You may have to do a boot-time defrag for the MFT and pagefile if they are fragmented. The HDD is the performance bottleneck in an otherwise decent machine; so keep it healthy and free of fragmentation, and performance will be stable.

    Good Luck!

    Do not use Regcure !

I tried the free version of it, it reports a load of problems but to be able to fix them you have to buy the full version ($29.99).

It has made my computer worse, takes ages to boot up. It stopped me accessing the internet. It even stopped me from running Regcure (I got a Windows sockets error). It will run a scan and identify loads of faults, it will then fix the faults but if you run another scan straightaway it will still find hundreds of faults.

I had to restore my PC to an earlier date.

I have requested my money back via Paypal, I will wait and see
