on my 3 phone i can rarely get the video services. it comes up " you are outside the video service area, only the following services are available". is this likely to mean that i wouldnt get any reception if i got a mobile broadband modem ?0

Hi want2bmortgage3,
The short answer to your question is no.
The longer answer, is that you should get some sort of internet access, but it will not be as fast as if you were actually in a video service area.
I am on T Mobile and I have a 3g phone (N95).
When I am in a 3g area I get a fast internet connection together with video calls, and when I am in a non 3g area I get a much slower connection to the internet and no video calls at all.
I only get no connection to the internet whatsoever, if I have no signal at all which means that i cannot make or receive calls. (In some way out places such as the the deepest Lake District)

ok thanks.. following on, is there any chance another 3g network would work, such as vodafone? it would still work out cheaper even at £15 a month than signing up to talktalk or virgin media (16.49 / 15.50) plus the setup cost.0

Hmmmm, not to sure about that.
I m afraid I would refer you back to the coverage maps that the respective providers have on their websites to see if one provider has different coverage to another.
You could always go into a Voda shop and ask more specific questions about coverage.

ok 3g Phones when no 3g network is not available roams onto a 2g network, three currently use orange. obviously voda etc use their own
So you are not going to get 3g speeds on a 2g network (or video)

Hi,
I have a e220 dongle on 3 that I want to use on vodafone.
Reading the links above I think Ive updated the firmware and I think its unlocked ( at least dc- unlocker says it is) .
Ive installed vodafone software ( the connection manager type thing) but it wont work.
My questions are ;
Is it possible that the reason it wont connect is bacause Im using a normal voda sim and not a 3g one or hspda??
Is there another conection manager type program that I can use , I could then use other sims too.
Once its unlocked what do you use to connect?
Thanks in advance

From the link in post #25:
Broadband Modem Dongles are high speed 3G modems, and inside you'll find a sim card, and once unlocked you can put any 3g Network Sim card in your Dongle (any network sim that operates on 3g, not just a SIM from three, just about all networks now have a 3g service)
Is there another conection manager type program that I can use , I could then use other sims too.
Once its unlocked what do you use to connect?

I don't think you need a 3g sim card to connect, but you will need one to connect at 3g speeds. The E220 works on non 3g services too. I've used a bog standard vodafone sim (at least I didn't request a 3g one and I'm pretty sure it isn't) and it connects fine. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

On Vodafone, T-mobile, Virgin & Asda, you can access 3G services automatically. On Orange, O2 & Tesco, you need a replacement 3G sim.
To use the 3 dongles with the non-three software, you need to create a network profile n the tools -> options menu, change the access point to static, and enter 3internet. If you connect with profile, it should work. However, even though it is now capable of 7.2mbps - the 3 network only goes up to 3.6mbps at the moment. I read that it will be upgraded to 7.2mbps as they integrate their network with T-Mobile.
If you put the generic software, it will not unlock a 3 dongle. This sometimes works on Vodafone dongles tho.
Hope this helps

Where is it that I create a network profile, I know you (heng lang) said tools options but where do I find this?
I now have 2 connectiom manager type programs on my PC, the 3 one and a vodafone one, which, if any do I use?
