Credit card suggestions for (possible) poor credit

in Credit cards
Hi all. Apologies if this is a little rambling. First post, so please be gentle ....
In my younger days I had a very slack attitude to credit. While I never borrowed large amounts, I would frequently leave £5 on my credit card for a couple of months, or leave my account £2 overdrawn.
Such idiotic behaviour has obviously come back to bite me as I looked for my first mortgage (although, hey I guess that can wait give the current economic climate); and my credit limit on my only credit card (bog standard Barclaycard) is £260.
Upon realising my situation I spent 14 months using my card wherever possible while always paying the full amount each month. In fact in order to keep the turnover and therefore borrowed amount as high as possible I would frequently pay off the card in full 2 or 3 times a month to borrow further.
When I came to request an increased credit limit today, I was notified that I had gone over my limit in Dec-07, therefore my request had been declined. True enough when I checked, I had gone £1.30 over my limit in December 07 due to me miscalculating the exchange rate (I spend a lot of time working abroad), and was advised to try again in 6 months. This has left me feeling that 12 months of trying to repair this has been wasted over a very minor indescertion.
The most annoying thing is that I never needed the card or the money, but was just trying to use it to improve my chance of obtaining a mortgage.
 x 2.
So, I guess my question (finally!) is, is there any point in me applying to other cards? If so, any suggestions where may be best? Ideally I would like a cashback card as my outgoing company expenses mean I could easily spend £40k a year on it, or failing that a 0% on purchases offer. But obviously I don't want to add pointless searches to my credit file for cards that will likely reject me.
Despite going £1.30 overdrawn, my Experian file shows a nice row of green zero's for the past 12 months. For information, I am registered on the electoral register, have no outstanding debts and earn above the national average.
However I have a CCJ on my file, again this is for a tardy and immature attitude rather than inability to pay as I failed to notify the DVLA of a change of address and didn't realise I had a £100 fine against me. This fine is over 2 years old and shows as satisifed (paid in full once I became aware of it).
I have looked to online articles for help, but most sources (Martin included) target people with real debt issues, rather than idiots like me who have impaired their credit worthiness through a lazy attitude.
Any help gratefully received! Thanks in advance.

You could try Capital One classic card. You will most likely get a low limit and high APR 34% +. Make sure you pay it off each month, don't use it to get cash out.0

Vanquis / Aqua card0

You could try contacting DVLA by letter and ask them is they would be willing to remove the CCJ under the circumstances. It's worth the cost of a stamp. My wife did it with a firm of solicitors and the removed it almost immediately.0

I'll try applying for one of the suggested cards and see what happens.
The DVLA is worth a punt too. Thanks for the suggestions.
Are there any thoughts on how long I should leave it before requesting an credit limit increase from Barclaycard? Does 6 months from when I went overdrawn seem reasonable?0 -

does that mean that if you DONT have any adverse credit with the Halifax ie you dont owe them money, they wont give you a card? sounds a bit strange!
CC limits £26000
Long term CC debt £0
Total low rate loan debt £3000
Almost debt free feeling, priceless.
Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.0 -
