Naming Day Readings or Poems

Hi, I am planning my sons naming day and am looking for readings or poems suitable for the occasion. I don't want anything religious, but something meaningful. A funny one would be good too - the day is to be casual and fun - but remembering why we are there. My friend recently had her son's christening and read Guess how much I love you, which is lovely but obviously don't want to use it!
Thanks:o

Hi there,
Is it for a boy or girl?0 -
Sorry, I can see now you said a Boy!0

I had a naming ceremony for my son a couple of years back and had two readings. The first one was "Children learn what they live" by Dr Dorothy Nolte and the second was a poem I got off the internet called My Baby Boy and Me. Would you like me to type them in for you???0

It's 3 am they're all asleep,
And no one's here to see
as we rock slowly back and forth
My Baby Boy and me
His little head is feather light
tucked up against my chin
I hold his tiny hand in mine
and stroke his baby skin
The house about us creaks and groans
the clock hands creep around
He snuggles closer to me still
and makes his baby sounds
I love these quiet hours so much
and cherish every one
store memories up inside my heart
for lonely nights to come
All too soon he'll be grown up
his need for Mummy gone
but until then I still have time
for kisses and for song
Time for quiet hours like this
with him cuddled in my arms
where I wish he'd always stay
protected, safe and warm
And yet I know the day will come
when this tiny little hand
will be much bigger than my own
he'll grow to be a man
But until then he's mine to love
with no one here to see
as we rock slowly back and forth
my Baby Boy and me.

When my niece was 'named' a few years ago my sister did this buddist thing where she tied a long ribbon round my nieces' wrist and then the ribbon was passed round the room with each guest touching it, the other end was then tied to my nieces other wrist, symbolizing all these people would impact on her life!!
Furthermore she asked if anyone wanted to tell their wish for my niece, for example I (primed before by my sister to get the thing started) wished that my niece would feel the love of family and have a friend (or maybe even a sister) to share the happy times and support in the sad times that I had got from her mummy. My parents wished she would find the love of a partner like they had in each other - etc etc. It really was lovely on the day
And both involved the small group attending.
Hope it goes well and congratulations

There is no point in negative thought, it takes up time and energy which could be used in a positive, happy way!

If children live with tolerance, they learn to be patient
If children live with encouragement, they learn to be confident
If children live with praise, they learn to appreciate
If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves
If children live with acceptance, they learn to find love in the world
If children live with recognition, they learn to have a goal
If children live with sharing, they learn to be generous
If children live with honesty and fairness, they learn what truth and justice are
If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those around them
If children live with friendliness, they learn that the world is a nice place in which to live.
If children live with serenity, they learn to have peace of mind.
Hope that is the sort of thing you were looking for. Good luck and hope you have a lovely day.0 -
Another one I got off the internet for my Daughter's naming, but suitable for a boy too!
I often stand here watching you
For just a moment not to wake
The sleeping babe before my eyes
That your Daddy helped me make
Your breath come softly as you slumber
And I stand smiling falling under
The spell that you have cast on me
Since that day you came to be
I hope your dreams are filled with love
A place that monsters do not know
I hope that you can sense the pride
As I look down on you below
Tomorrow when you wake my dear
And beam that smile at me
We will begin another day
Full of things for you to see
And when the day has worn you out
You rub your tired eyes
I lay you down to sleep again
Then stand and watch my prize
Your breath come softly as you sleep
Taking you to dreamland deep
And as I watch my perfect child
My heart is not contained inside
It is the star that lights the sky
The little twinkle in your eye
The laughter that escapes your lips
The softness of your finger tips
So every day and all through time
Your happiness will then be mine
And I will watch your dreams come true
And cherish every ounce of you.0 -
I don't have any type of advice on poems (although I have to say there are loads available on the net) but I love the idea of a naming day. Sounds wonderful.0

Lonneyleo thanks very much for those poems - they are lovely, I love the first one - my baby boy and me - a strong contender! Redmadcurls - think I will do the wishes thing - sounds lovely too.:j:T0

Is there a website anyone can recommend to get poems and readings like these?:p Also something short for my 3 year old daughter to say or something for her to do - so far have found this for her to possibly say -
My baby brother is so small,
he’s hardly even there at all.
The only way that we can find him
is by the smell he leaves behind him.0
