Plenty of Powersellers on the ebay discussion board are certainly going down the route of their own website - it's pretty easy to set one up now, and much more cost effective as a selling outlet. eBay is being used as a method to gain new customers and drive traffic to these websites.
There are so many possible variations in what could happen, but one thing's for certain and that is that ebay is very conscious of it's shareholders, and can not afford to upset them.

I'm in the process of setting up my own auction site, just as a bolt on to the website, and not as any sort of competitor to ebay/tazbar etc.
All in inc design is only about £1k."Love you Dave Brooker! x"

It's been their stated intention to retain the larger business model sellers rather than the small 'hobby' sellers. That's why the big sellers get the fee breaks and the added paypal protection that the rest of us don't get.
They aim to move towards a model where ebay is seen a a professional selling platform with business sellers who comply with all the selling regulations, rather than to stay as a site seen as a hobby seller paradise.
Might as well get my coat now...
My main worry is that if any other auction venue does become attractive to the hobby sellers ebay is ditching, ebay will simply take them over, as they have with half.com, craigslist, gumtree, mobil.de etc..."Love you Dave Brooker! x"

All ebayers are equal, but some are more equal than others...
