Software Asset Management

I am looking for a piece of software that will list all software installed on servers and PCs at my company. We have trialled Centennial Discovery and found it to be most capable but not easy to use, and rather costly. I have now been recommended to try Spiceworks. This is freeware and they fund it through adverts. Does anybody have any experience of Spiceworks, or are you able to recommend other similar products please?

Hello, I have been using spiceworks for over 3 month now and what a bloody useful tool it is, I run it on a HP Proliant DL380 and it has saved me hours if not days of running around and gathering data from the PC'S/Laptops etc on my companies Network, it is truly free and there is so much you can do with it I cannot begin to start typing, however make sure that you take down the XP firewall or enable the remote admin function using "gpedit.msc", or you will get tonnes of scan errors, the reporting tool is better than that on our MRP system, I have also found the ODBC driver for it as well, if you Google sql lite 3 ODBC driver you can download it for free. If you need any specific help with this software I will be more than happy to help. Oh by the way the online helpdesk is the mutt’s nuts too!

Excellent news Proliant, and many thanks for your glowing report of Spiceworks. I am not all that techie myself so I rely on our support company for the clever stuff. I have 3 questions to ask you please:

    1) Our file & print server is also a DL380 but the info on the Spiceworks website suggests installing it on a PC - is it better to install it on the server instead?
    2) The XP firewalls are not enabled, but I am not sure what you mean by 'remote admin function using "gpedit.msc". I use Remote Desktop to access the server, is this a different type of remote management?
    3) and why would I want an ODBC driver for it?

Well you can run it on what ever you like as long as internet information services is installed on the host machine, I use the DL380 Server for processing power and central managment, the remote admin function is that of the xp firewall in the group policy which can be tweaked via "gpedit.msc", it allow's you to scan and create a network inventory on XP machines. And the ODBC driver means that you can tap into the spice works database via MS Access or Excel, just incase you wanted to play about with the data.

Well I am really impressed with Spiceworks, it does so much for a piece of free software! What I can't seem to find is if it is capable of scanning our network for music files - MP3 and AAC for instance. Any ideas?
