Ceiling hook?

Hello,

I have bought one of those compartmented toy bags that you hang from the ceiling from Ikea. I would like to know what to use to hang it up on, ie like a ceiling hook or something so that it would be really secure? I'm totally clueless when it comes to any form of DIY but common sense tells me this is something I could do myself instead of paying someone. I do not know what information anyone would need to answer this, but if it helps: the house was built in 1932, art deco and the ceiling has squares. The bag filled weighs about 10kg.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • You need to locate one of the ceiling joists. You can do this by trial and error by knocking on the ceiling with a mallet and listening for the tone to change as you pass across a joist or (better) look at the floor of the room above and work out where the joists run by looking at the nail holes in the floorboards.

The ceiling will be lath and plaster and therefore about 25mm thick. Once you know where the joists are it is a simple matter to drill through the plaster into the joist. The hook doesn't have to be very big for 10kg, use one with about a 75 mm shank (so it goes at least 50mm into the joist).
