I understand that 2nd generation ones are due sometime this year, but don't really know what 2g entails. Is it worth waiting?
Are all bluray players capable of upscaling normal dvd's?
We've just bought our first HD tv, but have 100's of dvd's so want to start with one that'll play both.
Edit: Can you get bluray home cinemas yet?

The best Value-Performance player at the moment is without doubt the Sony Playstation 3, it is future proof via internet updates, Sony have regularly updates for the player, it can play DVD's and upscales them to 1080p and of course if you want you can play games/surf the net/play music disks/store digital music and videos, it has a built in Wi-Fi and is after a shakey start finding its feet as an entertainment all rounder, As mentioned it wont represent the top end in terms of performance but its Blu-Ray performance is admirable and to most users it will be fine.0

The PS3 by a country mile. Since the various (suspiciously timed) updates, it has developed into one of the best gadgets ever. It can do so much more than play games and blurays, which it excels at (although the number of games is pretty limited and PSN is no match for Xbox live). It's the only profile 2.0 player around, so any other player you bought would be a stop-gap until the technology settles down. If you want a stand-alone player I would get a Samsung 1400 and be ready to sell it on in a year and get a new profile 2.0 model. If you can't be bothered with that and can put up with a games console then the PS3 is the one for you. The remote is extra though but if you have a universal remote (pronto, harmony etc.) take a look at ir2bt.com. You need the remote but it's not backlit and works on bluetooth, so can't be used with a universal remote without intervention from a gizmo like the ir2bt. The bluray playback (and upscaling) is on a par with far more expensive kit.0
