Where are privately-sold homes advertised?

Hello,

In addition to the usual property websites that are used by EAs, where do people selling their homes themselves advertise? Are there well-known websites (that I clearly don't know about!) or is it a matter of trawling the internet/local papers etc?

I really like the idea of buying something that someone is selling themselves....

Would be grateful for any pointers in the right direction...

Ta muchly...

Hellie

Two good places to start are the members list page of the Association of Property Advertisers. 23 sites at the last count. These are all FSBO (For Sale By Owner) private sale sites and do not allow Estate Agents to advertise.

You can also check out the sites that subscribe to the UK's Private Property Sale Portal which amalgamates listings from over 50 Private Sales Sites.

the longest established national private sites are:

    houseladder
    houseweb
    mypropertyforsale
    thelittlehousecompany

Online estate agents (not really private sales, but cheaper than traditional agents):

    halfapercent
    hatched
    housenetwork

or try Google for "sell my house privately" or "private house sales" etc

Hi, Has anyone had experience of housesimple.co.uk? Their fees seem OK to me with 3 different options AND they list you on Rightmove which a lot of the others don't appear to do.

Also can I just ask if anyone forsees problems if I start marketing my house myself but then decide later to take on a traditional Estate Agent too?

    Regards
    Julie
  • According to http://www.housekeys.co.uk/faq/#a2 you can sell your home and be with an estate agent at the same time.

  • Julie,
If you advertise your house yourself and then go to an estate agent, the only problem area you face is where an estate agent introduces you to a prospective buyer and you or they attempt a private sale.
If a buyer comes forward who has responded to your private advertisement, you can sell to them even if your house is also in the hands of an agent.
I made a mistake 25 years ago in that I attempted to sell my house privately; person A looked at it, but took it no further; I then put it in the hands of an estate agent; a little while person A came back to me with an offer and I wrongly said 'sorry, you now have to go through the estate agent'. When I spoke to the estate agent (an acquaintance) he said, "I wish you hadn't done that. You could have sold it privately and saved our fees!" In the event they reduced their fees.
    I hope that makes sense.
    Best wishes,
    Paul

We are selling our house privately with thelittlehousecompany. I wish there were more people who wanted to purchase privately!
Hats off to you, Hellie. Spread the word if you find a private sale, let people knowit is no different than an ea.
Best of luck - don't forget to search your local paper too.
